Will you join us on a breathtakingly romantic and luxurious new driving adventure on some of Europe’s greatest rally roads? Inspired by ancient myths and modern legends, the Odyssey Italia will run over 14 days in September 2017, starting from Sanremo on the Italian Riviera and exploring the Mediterranean islands of Corsica and Sardinia before finishing in glorious Tuscany.

This is the first Rally Round event designed by Kim Bannister (click to visit our Team page). Kim is internationally-renowned for his previous work on the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge, Flying Scotsman, Classic Safari, Trans-America Challenge and many more, and Odyssey Italia is a rally he has long dreamed of organising. Fabulous roads through sun-drenched mountains and sparkling coastal landscapes, iconic locations and historic treasures, superb four- and five-star hotels, exquisite cuisine and good company combine to make this the most exciting and exclusive event we have yet devised, limited to 40 vintage and pre-1969-type classic cars. Our relaxed schedule allows for leisurely sightseeing and refreshment breaks and all our island hotels are adjacent to fine beaches, so you may even enjoy sunbathing, swimming or diving at locations such as Porto Cervo on Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda. What’s more our start and finish hotels are within easy reach of major airports, so with secure vehicle shipping handled by CARS UK you may easily extend your stay if you wish. Do please note that we have made some changes to the provisional itinerary outlined in the event brochure; to avoid congestion in Genoa we have moved the rally start a few kilometres down the coast to Sanremo, and as recently-announced dates for the FIA Rallye Elba Storico overlap with our planned visit to Elba we shall sail directly from Sardinia to the mainland, and enjoy more time in the lovely Tuscan hills. Unsurprisingly, entries to this wonderful event started arriving within hours of the brochure being published; first in were Jonathan and Karen Turner with a 1953 Jaguar. The three most recent entrants are all, coincidentally, in C2 Corvette Sting Rays – experienced rallyists Stephen and Kim Lloyd and American crew Danny and Valerie Day, both with 1973 cars, and Dutch couple FM and Antionette Claessens in a 1966 machine. Meanwhile Graham and Marina Goodwin have confirmed their car as a 1952 Jaguar XK120 Coupe, Australians Steve and Ruth Lambert are bringing a 1935 Ford Model 48 Fordor Sedan, former Paris-Vienna and Mille Miglia competitors Ian and Julie Strang have a 1955 AC Ace, Tjerk and Sally Bury are in a 1972 Datsun 240Z and Edmund Peel and Sara Macdonald have entered a 1950 Jaguar XK120 with extensive rally history. The highly experienced Do Meeus and Elizabeth Els are bringing their 1955 Jaguar XK140 from Holland, Swiss crew Marco Halter and Claudia Engelhardt will drive a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro and Mr & Mrs Mark Robinson have entered a 1937 Rolls-Royce 25/30 (another veteran of Bhutan). Bill Cleyndert and Jacqui Norman have yet to confirm whether they will drive their 1924 Bentley 3/4.5, but their friends and fellow Bentley aficionados Robert and Jane Abrey have signed up with the 1930 Bentley 6.5 in which they won the Charles Jarrott Trophy on Paris-Vienna.

Former Paris-Vienna competitors David and Natasha Royds are also returning with their 1922 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, Bill and Jo Brandt will drive their 1929 Chrysler 75 Le Mans, Petr Uhlir and Petr Kejdus are bringing their sporty 1967 Jaguar Mk2 and Melvyn Andrews is coming from the USA with a 1956 Jaguar XK140, co-driven by Margaret Andrews. Canadians Lloyd and Treacey Reddington will drive a 1970 Morgan Plus 8 and from the Netherlands Anthony and Sonja Verloop have entered the 1973 MGB GT V8 in which they completed the Trans-America Challenge (and which Anthony twice navigated from Peking to Paris alongside Mick de Haas). Another interesting entry is the 1967 Volkswagen Beetle of Ed and Janet Howle, who hail from North Carolina, USA – the car is called ‘Stewball’ after the folk ballad inspired by an 18th Century British racehorse and covered by Peter, Paul and Mary in 1967, and although it doesn’t look very exotic it has driven at least once around the world and competed in numerous long-distance events including two Trans-America Challenges. How many miles has it covered in total? “We really don’t know,” say Ed and Janet. “The odometer broke a long time ago!”

Whatever their gender, age or experience level, entrants may count on the dedicated support of the highly experienced Rally Round team; we offer advice and assistance with everything from rally preparation to vehicle transport and insurance and provide fully qualified mechanical and medical support, plus a luggage bus service. You will require no special equipment other than a tripmeter and stopwatch; navigation will be by straightforward tulip roadbook and there will be no tricky map work, night driving or car-breaking terrain. Insurance

We are an Introducer Appointed Representative of Tyser & Co Ltd (‘Tysers’) – an Insurance Intermediary authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (registration number 308648) – and we are confident that they will be able to make all the necessary insurance arrangements you may require. Odyssey Italia insurance application forms are now available on the Tysers website – go to http://www.tysers.com/publications/index.html. Having received the completed forms, Tysers will issue quotations to you for Motor, Transit & Travel insurance. Please note that personal travel/accident insurance is compulsory. You are free to arrange alternative cover if you wish; CARS EUROPE can offer optional Transit Insurance for your vehicle, for example.
