The Return of the Thunder Dragon

Rally Round is delighted to offer yet another extraordinary driving adventure. Shortlisted as Rally of the Year in the International Historic Motoring Awards, our first Thunder Dragon Rally in November 2015 was an unforgettable journey into the magical Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan – Land of the Thunder Dragon – and in Spring 2018 we shall retrace our steps, once again starting from Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and motoring through West Bengal to arrive in Bhutan for the Kingdom’s largest and most spectacular festival, the annual Tschechu and Royal Flower Exhibition in Paro.

For the first week you will experience the infinite variety of West Bengal, from the vibrant metropolis of Kolkata to charming rural villages and the fascinating little city of Darjeeling, home of the world’s finest tea and the world-famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Thence into the Kingdom of Bhutan, a mystical land that previous explorers have compared to Shangri-La. Decorated everywhere with brightly coloured prayer flags, the Bhutanese landscape ranges from secluded, fertile valleys studded with vividly painted buildings, gilded temples and monasteries to high mountain passes offering astounding views of the snow-capped Himalayas. Your journey will include the most breathtaking roads you have ever encountered, a variety of spectacular festivities, activities and excursions and above all a wonderfully warm welcome from a smiling people more concerned with Gross Domestic Happiness than Gross Domestic Product.

Just like the first Thunder Dragon Rally, this is a highly sociable and non-competitive event, designed for crews of any experience level in vintage or classic cars of a type produced before 1982. We can promise you the most exciting drive of your life, lots of fun and laughter and a truly unforgettable experience. Nevertheless please note that we can only accommodate 30 cars, so if you want to join us we recommend that you contact the Rally Office as soon as possible via the Enquiry button at the top of this page. You will find many more details in the rally brochure, which you may read or download via the link on this page – we will of course be happy to send you a hard copy on request. You may also get a flavour of what to expect in Bhutan by watching our 2015 Thunder Dragon videos (click here) or by reading the event blog on our 2015 Thunder Dragon page (click here).

We very much hope you can join us on this exhilarating new adventure, and look forward to hearing from you!

Any well-maintained car can cope with Bhutan’s mountain roads – but you will never forget the experience!
